Local Area, Things To Do, Provisioning

HISTORY.  Our gateway town, incorporated in 1647, is the oldest incorporated town in Maine.  Kittery guards the mouth of the Piscataqua River, boasts a rich history and, like most coastal New England communities, draws its existence from the sea and the availability of a good, deep water harbor.  Kittery’s early existence was tied to the sea; it developed as a fishing and shipbuilding center, a role it continues to fulfill.  In the late 1600’s, the area was the source of masts for the Royal Navy, resulting in much of the area being harvested.  It is also home to our nation’s oldest shipyard.  Active to this day, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has been building ships since the early 1800’s, including the 74-gun ship Washington (launched in 1815) and the Kearsarge (famous for sinking the Confederate raider Alabama during the Civil War).  The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum is a virtual treasure trove of old and cherished artifacts from Kittery’s seafarers – be sure to stop in!

Bordered by the Piscataqua River and the Atlantic Ocean, Kittery provides protected anchorages as well as beautiful parks, trails and unspoiled beaches.  With its rural, maritime flavor, Kittery is a peaceful oasis just a few minutes from bustling downtown Portsmouth.

THINGS TO DO.  Kittery restaurants, inns and shops are within walking distance or a short cab ride; access to two State Parks and historic sites are within walking distance; the historic Strawbery Banke, shops, hotels and restaurants of Portsmouth, NH are just a dinghy ride across the harbor or a walk across the bridge.

Parks, Trails & Beaches:

  • Fort McClary – For more than 275 years, she has stood poised to protect the approaches to the Piscataqua River at the southern gateway of Kittery. It is a short walk from KPYY.
  • Fort Foster – Located on the southwest tip of Gerrish Island in Kittery Point, Maine, it was acquired by the federal government in 1872 and consists of 72 acres featuring two hiking trails along the mouth of the Piscataqua River.
  • Rogers Park – Offers several trails that run along the wooded shore of Spruce Creek. A great place to walk your dog.
  • The Rachel Carson Preserve – Part of a 10-parcel system of conserved properties, extending from Kittery to as far north as Cape Elizabeth, that protect 4,700 acres of marsh and a fresh-water wetland.
  • Seapoint and Crescent Beaches – Seapoint is a 550-yard sandy crescent beach. With gentle surf on the north side of a tiny peninsula, it is backed by a marsh, providing wonderful bird-watching. Nearby Crescent Beach is considered the “local” beach.
