Simple Elegance in a Holland 32

Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors: Boats of the Year 2018  (page B35)

A year ago, a customer considered making the move from a small classic sailboat into a lobster-style powerboat.  Once a stern mate for a lobsterman, he wanted a boat that reflected his vision of tradition – a flawless finish and the warm elegance of a wooden boat inside the cabin – combined with low exterior maintenance.

The project was to be a surprise for his wife.  Striking out in the used-boat market, he explored new builds.  Glenn Holland’s 32 was a great match due to its timeless design, size, and pedigree.

Kittery Point Yacht Yard received the hull and house kit from Holland, then designed and finished the boat.  It was outfitted with a Yanmar 8LV 370 HP diesel engine and ZF 220 transmission.  For a Holland 32, this combination is a first, selected because the weight-to-HP ratio and RPM range is similar to big-block gas V-8’s typically found in these boats.  Sea trials of the boat, christened Lady Erin, were impressive, quietly cruising at 16 knots and opening wide at 30 knots.

“Vision with a passion for execution make perfection in your work,” said Kittery Point Yacht Yard President, Tom Allen.  “My team did a great job.  She is truly a one-of-a-kind Holland.”

KPYY was named 2017 Boatyard of the Year by the American Boat Builders & Repairers Association.

Kittery Point Yacht Yard Wins ABBRA Award with Ground Breaking Standards and Ever Growing Expectations

“Although Tom Allen described his journey to boatyard owner as “wayward,” his story is not an uncommon one in this business. Successful businessman who has always loved boats is done with the business world and buys a boatyard or marina. After an 18-year career in the financial services industry, Allen had “been there, done that” and was looking for a new opportunity. His neighborhood boatyard was struggling, and it was the perfect opportunity. “I didn’t want to see it change its current use, because that’s what often happens and a community loses another part of its history and identity,” Allen said…” Read More
